Updated: December 31 2015 12:08 pm In a talk program titled ‘Is Modi’s India flirting with fascism’ Mehdi Hasan grilled Ram Madhav on issues ranging from Kashmir to religious intolerance in India Related News “Anger and intolerance” observed the greatest of Indians Mohandas Gandhi “are the enemies of correct understanding” So what would the Mahatma say if he were alive today in modern India with his own Twitter account and Facebook page What would he make of the anger and intolerance of the country’s right-wing internet trolls long ago dubbed the “bhakts” and condemned by the former Indian intelligence official B Raman for their “abuse vituperation disinformation [and] character assassination” To witness from afar the angry antics of the bhakt army — or the Modi toadies to quote Salman Rushdie — is one thing; to be on the receiving end of their relentless hate and bile is another Over the past three years on my show Head to Head on Al Jazeera English I have interviewed more than 30 high-profile guests from around the world ranging from Israeli settler leader Dani Dayan to “New Atheist” scientist Richard Dawkins to the former Pakistani ISI chief Asad Durrani Yet never have I experienced the sort of backlash that I have had to endure online over the past few days in the wake of my headline-grabbing interview with Ram Madhav national general secretary of the BJP and former spokesperson for the RSS Not from Nigerians Israelis Egyptians Pakistanis Palestinians Americans or Britons Hell it seems has no fury like a Hindu nationalist scorned I have been denounced and defamed as a “closet Islamist” a “funder of ISIS” and — perhaps the most damning appellation of all in The Bumper Book of Bhakt Political Insults — a “Pakistani” For the record I have no ties to Pakistan whatsoever I am you might say a child of India: Born and raised in the UK but to parents born and raised in India I spent most of my summer holidays as a child in Hyderabad and even got married there Yet in today’s Narendra Modi-led India those Muslims who dare speak out are told to go to Pakistan; those liberals or leftists who dare condemn the BJP for creating a “climate of intolerance” are accused of trying to “defame the government and in turn… defame the image of India” to quote Madhav on my show thereby conflating the ruling BJP with the nation of India As for the laughable charge of “Islamism” I happen to be the author of a piece headlined “There is nothing Islamic about a state” My 2014 Head to Head interview with Muslim thinker Tariq Ramadan was titled “Has Political Islam failed” (Yes almost a decade ago I gave a speech in which I regrettably and foolishly quoted a verse from the Quran that refers metaphorically to unthinking non-Muslims as “cattle” but — and here’s what the bhakts conveniently overlook — I also quoted a verse from the Quran that refers to unthinking Muslims as “cattle” too) But why focus on the message when you can shoot the messenger Let’s be clear: There was no conspiracy against Madhav or the BJP First it was pure coincidence that my interview recorded in Oxford on December 7 was aired on December 25 the day the Indian prime minister arrived in Lahore to meet with his Pakistani counterpart Believe it or not Prime Minister Modi did not share in advance with Al Jazeera his secret plans to wish Nawaz Sharif a happy birthday in person Second prior to appearing on Head to Head Madhav was personally briefed by my producers about the “gladiatorial” format of the show and claimed to have enjoyed watching my earlier confrontation with General Durrani (Perhaps he and his supporters only enjoy interviews in which I pose tough questions to Pakistanis) Third the title of the show “Is India flirting with fascism” is no more biased or provocative than the title of my 2014 Head to Head with feminist Mona Eltahawy “Do Arab men hate women” or of my 2013 clash with author Irshad Manji “What is wrong with Islam today” The inconvenient truth for the bhakts is that a senior BJP official not only pointed at his Muslim interviewer and said“your ISIS” but also admitted to supporting the RSS vision of “Akhand Bharat” in which Pakistan and Bangladesh are re-united with India The BJP has been forced to disown Madhav’s comments which undermined Modi’s visit to Pakistan and gave the opposition plenty of anti-Hindutva ammunition Madhav’s latest claim that his “Akhand Bharat” remarks were in relation to a “cultural idea” is disingenuous to say the least Speaking to me on Head to Head the BJP national general secretary referred explicitly to political not cultural unification: “If two Germanies can come together if two Vietnams can come together what makes you to think… that Pakistan and India cannot come together” This important admission came at a personal cost: The bhakt army continues to hound me on social media So do I regret interviewing Ram Madhav Not at all As the old adage goes the job of a journalist is to “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable” It is a principle that has underpinned every single one of my interviews whether with the former prime minister of Israel or the current foreign minister of Qatar Now whether Madhav regrets appearing on Head to Head however is another matter On the issue of “Akhand Bharat” after all the former RSS spin doctor has a lot more spinning to do The writer is presenter of ‘Head to Head’ on Al Jazeera English His interview with Ram Madhav is available at wwwaljazeeracom/headtohead For all the latest Opinion News download Indian than 70000 people were displaced to make way for last year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro Today some are satisfied in their new houses Others had to start over and are struggling bitter at the pressure from city officials and real estate speculators to relocate It will take years maybe decades to understand the impact the Olympics had on Rio It’s the same for those who were forced to move from long-time but often modest homes The mandatory relocation experience isn’t unique to Rio London faced the same issue as did Beijing before it But Rio’s poverty and vast inequality helped draw attention to the actions of the city and Olympic organizers Former mayor Eduardo Paes was often credited by the International Olympic Committee as the moving force behind the event Paes is currently being investigated for allegedly accepting at least 15 million reals ($5 million) in payments to facilitate construction projects tied to the games Here is what some Brazilians relocated by the Olympics had to say about their move: VICTORY AMONG RUINS Maria da Penha was one of the most vocal resisters of the Olympic-related evictions She used to live in Vila Autodromo the favela next to the Olympic Park City Hall bulldozed her three-story house five months before the event but even then she refused to leave She now lives in one of the 20 whitewashed identical bungalows the city had to build for them at the last minute “We managed to stay on this land but my happiness is incomplete because we’re just 20 families out of 600” she said Much of the community’s old land was turned into a now-unused access road and the survivors still struggle with deficient services Around them pieces of walls and kitchen tiles are a reminder of the aggression they faced Like many who fought eviction they blame Paes for putting real estate interests above community rights Paes did not respond to repeated requests for comment “They justified house demolition and interruption of life stories under the name of the Olympics” Penha added GOOD BUSINESS A 63-year-old foreman and fisherman Jorge Ramos used to live in a multi-story house at Vila Autodromo with his wife and three adult children Negotiating for his whole family Ramos exchanged his old house for three 645-square-foot apartments at one of the social housing complexes plus what he calls “sufficient” compensation Two years in he is already refurbishing the failing pipes in his apartment “Of course they were not going to be the best because they were built in a hurry but it’s up to each one to make it as cozy as they want” he said While he laments the threats and aggression of City Hall he considers himself a winner in the process “What I had at Vila Autodromo was the house of my dreams but I accepted that it was over and went looking for the best I could get” he said THE HOUSING TRAP Jane Nascimento was first evicted during the lead-up to the 2007 Pan American Games and had to move out of her newer house again in 2015 She settled for two social housing apartments one for each adult daughter and 50000 reals ($15000) as compensation The 61-year-old artisan lost her front teeth and much of her sight during the process which she attributes to stress in the tussle with City Hall But while some lucked out on their apartment deals she ended up in a much smaller place inside an isolated condominium heavily monitored by militias Her apartment resembles a tiny warehouse and water keeps leaking from the roof “They took away my freedom to have a house to have a dog to work at home even to move around at home” she said She wants to sell the apartments but is scrambling to get all her paperwork done UNDER THE BUS When the city presented its plans for transportation lines between Olympic venues Daniel Ferreira’s house was right on one of the proposed tracks “They came to measure take some pictures and called me to offer 34000 reals ($10000)” he recalled Along with other neighbors he fought back to move the line and save thousands of homes His house still stands but the city destroyed all access bridges to the houses in his street and left a fetid river of sewage exposed “This may be a pile of rubbish for them but it’s my castle” he said “Everything I conquered in life is here” SUCCESSFUL RESISTANCE Despite being more than three miles away from the closest Olympic venue the northern community of Indiana was also targeted by the city Longtime residents like Marcello Deodoro recall the visit of city agents with promises of upgrading works Soon after they were told they had to leave and make room for a public square “For Paes favela residents were a disgrace to the city so any favela was at risk at the time” Deodoro recalled City Hall managed to create animosity between residents and tear down five houses before Paes was forced to backtrack and apologize in person Despite the broken promises of better services the community is still proud of that moment “We showed him we’re poor but not dumb and we deserve respect” he added For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More Top NewsPanaji: The BJP on Thursday filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) against a 2014 Though the Congress emerged as the single largest party after the Assembly polls held in February this year the BJP with the support of the Goa Forward Party the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party novel An award winning sports journalist and news anchor Tina has worked with leading news organisations in her career spanning 15 years and has covered Olympics Asian Games Cricket World Cups and Common Wealth Games She is currently a senior news anchor and consultant with Times Now In an interaction with Indian Express Onlineat the book launch of her second novel ‘Who me’ Tina spoke to us about her journey from sports anchor to novel writer andmore Celebrity stylist Rishi Raj author Tina Sharma Tiwari and Bollywood singer Kanika Kapoor at the book launch of ‘Who me’ (L-R) From a sports commentator to covering general elections to writing two novels how has your experience been so far I love doing different things so for me it is always great to have a new challenge I always want to do something new something different For me writing the first book (Running on Full)was a really big step And the second one came more naturally because obviously when you have done something already you get a lot more confidence and you start believing in yourself So this book was flowing very easily I started believing that I can write and I enjoy writing How was the response to your first book – Running on Full The response to my first book was really good I had zero expectations because being first time author you really do not know what you are getting into But the response was good and the book made it to the bestselling list but obviously it didn’t go in lakhs of copies or anything So I would say it did reasonably well but didn’t break any records What made you write ‘Who me’ about a girl who doesn’t get this guy and comes back in a different avatar I always draw a parallel My favorite kind of plot is sporting metaphor Even in sports or in movies my favorite kinds of stories have always been the story of the dog who comes back and fights and wins So you can apply the same metaphor to the story or life So when I sat down to write this book my idea was to write about that under-dog who comes back and wins the fight So that is where it has come from What inspired you to this plot Many things Firstly on a basic level this book is also about female friendships So that period in my life when you are young professional and you are working and living with other young girls who are also working and you have moved out of your parents home I had this wonderful period of four-five years where I also formed strong bonds with them That real life experience was a wonderful period in my life What was your experience when as a young girl you stepped out of your home in a new city and living on your own It was my first time when I moved out after college for my first job and I was living with a couple of other female journalists We were new and young it was the first taste of independence for us and it was a wonderful period of about four years when we were just living life to the fullest on our terms without anyone telling us what to do or anyone having any expectations from us It was a very liberating period and has profound effect on me That’s why I have written about that kind of friendship in this book How much would you relate this book to your personal life or instances that have happened so far Not too many in terms of instances or in terms of plot I wouldn’t say I have borrowed it from my life But in terms of interpersonal relationships Yes Like I said (it is inspired from) friendships and also heartbreaks All of us have gone through it and has friends who have gone through it So things like friendships heartbreaks and love certainly come from a lot of what I have seen in my life In terms of plot it is absolutely fiction But they often say fiction can never be purely fiction True Plot may be completely fiction but the character and the relationships will always reflect people you know or things you have been through so I agree with that I don’t think anything can be purely fiction because author’s own influences always come in So how much your influence has come in I would say 20% of my influence and 80% is fictional Who are your target readers My main target readership is young Indian women and I feel that there are huge number of women who are moving out of smaller cities coming to the metro-cities working are independent and living on their own Five reasons why one should pick ‘Who me’ Loving yourself: It is about realising that the only person you have to love is yourself and it is of utmost importance Female friendship: The way female friendships have been projected is so real that the women would relate to themselves They would identify with it laugh with it cry with it It is plain funny It is laugh-out-loud book and I think everyone enjoys humour So if you want to laugh this is the book Interesting plot: So if you think you know what a ‘rom-com’ or ‘chick-flick’ is going to be like try reading this because it will surprise you It is the perfect comfort read: You want to read something quickly in a day on the couch on flight or on a journey and you want to feel good This is the book For all the latest Lifestyle News download Indian Express App More Related NewsBy: Express
