USC to partner with SETI for projects and research

Posted On Sep 17 2020 by

first_imgSearch for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, commonly know as SETI, recently agreed to partner with USC to “pursue the study of the living universe.”The SETI Institute is a non-profit organization that performs research and has a center for education and public outreach. The collaboration will be effective immediately. As a result, USC will gain access to the Institute to embark on joint projects. According to Randolph Hall, Vice President of Research, involvement is expected from physics, astronomy, biology, electrical engineering, computer science, cinema and the Keck School of Medicine.“USC and the SETI Institute have common interests in understanding life in all its forms, as well as communicating with students and the public on exciting scientific topics,” Hall wrote in an e-mail. “We are looking forward to starting joint research programs, education and internship opportunities for students, and creation of multimedia for science education.”The idea of a collaboration emerged three months ago when Dr. David Agus, the director of the USC Center for Applied Molecular Medicine and the USC Westside Prostate Cancer Center, met with Jill Tarter, the Director of the Center for SETI Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. at a conference. There, they talked about a possible collaboration between USC and SETI.Although the exact details of the collaboration are not yet known, Hall and Dr. Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at SETI, see benefits for both USC and SETI.Although it is still in discussions, people from the SETI Institute might come teach classes at USC.Research opportunities for the faculty will also be prevalent, and, if things go according to plan, so will undergraduate summer internships.“There are a lot of things we do that might be of interest to some of the students and some of the faculty at USC,” Shostak said. “We’re also interested in the stuff that you do in film and television and that sort of thing because we do a lot of outreach here; there are television crews here all the time and it will be useful to have, for example, material made that illustrates the kind of work we do and whatever we’re doing with USC.”One of the major shared interests is looking for microbial life in otherwise inhospitable environments. For some students, the prospect of working with SETI is exciting.“It would be really cool especially since I am a computer science major and SETI does things like listen to noise from the universe and try to find intelligent signals within that noise,” said Nakul Joshi, a freshman majoring in computer science.last_img read more

Early signing period the latest loss for USC coach Clay Helton

Posted On Aug 14 2020 by

first_imgIt’s hard to believe Helton is so concerned about winning when he sports a 13-11 record the past two seasons. Even so, Signing Day was a loss for USC. And things will get even worse if the Trojans lose to Iowa in the Holiday Bowl.In an incredible display of bad timing, USC sent out a video in the middle of the worst signing day ever with Bohn and several players asking fans to travel to San Diego next week for the bowl game.It was promptly scorned on social media, like so many things involving USC these days. WOLF: USC, Mike Bohn must answer Helton question sooner rather than laterIf you want an example of how much things have changed for USC, none of the top 25 players in the state has signed or committed to the Trojans. Only one, wide receiver Gary Bryant Jr. of Corona Centennial, is expected to end up at USC. Just two years ago, the program signed the top four players in the Golden State. The reasons are simple: Helton’s precarious job security has created uncertainty, which will continue into next season. But perhaps more damaging is the perception among recruits that USC does not develop its players. Add in the idea that the best football is played in the SEC, Big Ten or Clemson, and things have gotten even more difficult for the Trojans.“I just feel like it’s different towards the Midwest, the East, the South, just because they cherish their football so much,” said quarterback CJ Stroud of Rancho Cucamonga, about 45 miles from USC. Stroud signed with Ohio State. It’s not just a USC problem. It’s a Pac-12 problem. In 2015, 16 of the top 25 players in California stayed in their home state. In 2020, 19 have already signed or committed to out-of-state schools; only one stayed in state.USC fans who were furious that Helton kept his job were irate again on Wednesday, especially when athletic director Mike Bohn not only promised recruiting would improve “dramatically,” but also said it was going better than people wanted to admit.Helton tried to put his best spin on the recruiting class during his early signing period news conference, which as of Wednesday was just 11 players.”At the end of the day I’m not about perception, I’m about wins,” Helton said.“It’s not going to be the national ranking because you just don’t have the numbers, but it does fill the needs,” he said. “And I’m more worried, again, about wins than I am about winning today. I’m more worried about winning on Saturday.” When five-star linebacker Justin Flowe grabbed an Oregon hat and announced he would play for the Ducks on Wednesday, it put the finishing touch on the worst-ranked recruiting class in USC history — or at least since 1999, which is as far back as 247Sports’ recruiting team rankings go.Trojans coach Clay Helton may have saved his job two weeks ago, but he couldn’t persuade recruits to play for his team. According to 247Sports’ Composite rankings, USC finished the first day of college football’s early signing period with the 78th-ranked recruiting class, right between Bowling Green and Louisiana. That ranks last in the Pac-12, and nine places behind the second-worst Pac-12 recruiting class: Arizona, at 69.last_img read more

While the visitors took the lead in the first test, a win in the second was just the confidence boost that the poms were needing, as they have now levelled the series 1-1 with today’s 113 run victory at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground.Advertisement Image Courtesy: ECB/GettyThe series started sour for the hosts, as West Indies swept up a 4 wicket victory in the first test. However, England started picking up pace in the second, and were already favourites with an astounding 291 lead at the end of 4th day, and packed West Indies up before touching a double century on the score.Starting with 37-2 on the scoreboard, the immaculate Ben Stokes went all in with a swashbuckling performance. The 29 year old smashed 78 runs from 57 balls, which included four boundaries and three over boundaries.Advertisement While the skipper Joe Root lost his wicket on 22, and Ollie Pope tail ended with a score of 12, the astounding innings from Stokes, who kept his strike till the end, was enough for England to finish the day with 129 runs. With an staggering target of 312 at hand, Windies openers Kraigg Braithwaite and John Campbell marched to the pitch for the chase. However, the hosts bowling squad, lead by the iconic Stuart Broad, capped the chase at 198.Advertisement With three wickets in the second innings, Broad was the hero of the showdown. Bowling 15 overs, the 34 year old pacer picked up three, starting with the early dismissals of Campbell (4), followed by Shai Hope(7) and Roston Chase (6), all with a 2.80 economy rate.Braithwaite was lbw’ed on Chris Woakes’s delivery on a score of 12, the English all rounder who picked his second with Windies wicket keeper Shane Dorwich on zero. However, it was the partnership of Sharmarh Brooks and Jermaine Blackwood that helped West Indies gain pace. Brooks, who scored a 62 with four boundaries and two sixes, marched off against Sam Curran. With seven fours, Blackwood also impressed with a 55, until ending up on the hands of Jos Buttler facing Stokes. The visitor skipper Jason Holder tried to add some breathing room towards the end of the innings. The 28 year old scored 35 runs including five boundaries and a single six, until getting clean bowled by Dom Bess in the 63rd over.It was only single digit scores from the lower batting order of Windies, as Kemar Roach (5) and Alzarri Joseph (9) lost wickets early against Bess and Stokes respectively. Shannon Gabriel was the last man standing with a duck, as West Indies were packed up on 198 in the 71st over.Stokes was the hero of the English dressing room. With a stellar batting performance and picking two wickets, the vice captain was termed as the superhero ‘Mr Incredible’ by his teammate Joe Root.“He’s Mr Incredible. South Africa’s transport network

Posted On Dec 18 2019 by

first_imgSouth Africa has a modern and well-developed transport infrastructure. The air and rail networks are the largest on the continent, and the roads in good condition. The country’s ports provide a natural stopover for shipping to and from Europe, the Americas, Asia, Australasia and both coasts of Africa.South Africa’s total road network is about 747 000km, the longest network of roads of any African country. (Image: Brand South Africa)Brand South Africa reporterThe transport sector has been highlighted by the government as a key contributor to South Africa’s competitiveness in global markets. It is regarded as a crucial engine for economic growth and social development, and the government has unveiled plans to spend billions of rands to improve the country’s roads, railways and ports.Ports and shippingMajor shipping lanes pass along the South African coastline in the south Atlantic and Indian oceans. Approximately 96% of the country’s exports are conveyed by sea, and the eight commercial ports are the conduits for trade between South Africa and its southern African partners as well as hubs for traffic to and from Europe, Asia, the Americas and the east and west coasts of Africa. The commercial ports are: Richards Bay and Durban in KwaZulu-Natal; East London, Port Elizabeth and the Port of Ngqura in the Eastern Cape; and Mossel Bay, Cape Town and Saldanha in the Western Cape. The state-owned Transnet National Ports Authority (NPA) manages the ports, while Transnet Port Terminals, formerly known as SAPO, is responsible for managing port and cargo terminal operations. The Port of Ngqura was completed in 2006. Developed off the coast from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, Nqura is the deepest container terminal in Africa, and is a key part of Coega, one of the country’s strategic industrial development zones (IDZs).Durban is Africa’s busiest port and the largest container facility in southern Africa, while Richard’s Bay is the world’s largest bulk coal terminal.Located between these two ports is the Dube Trade Port. Launched in March 2012, the port includes King Shaka International Airport. Operated by the Dube Trade Port Corporation, a state-owned company, the port includes a cargo terminal, trade zone, agrizone and IT and telecommunications platform. The old Durban International Airport will be turned into a multibillion-rand dug-out port by Transnet. Expected to be ready by 2019, development plans include the creation of an automotive component supplier park around the port.RoadsSouth Africa’s total road network is about 747 000km, the longest network of roads of any African country. The drive from Musina on South Africa’s northern border to Cape Town in the south is a 2 000km journey on well-maintained roads. While the Department of Transport is responsible for overall policy, road-building and maintenance is the responsibility of the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) as well as the nine provinces and local governments.Sanral is responsible for the country’s network of national roads, which cover around 16 200km. There are about 185 000km of provincial roads, and the municipal network totals around 66 000km, according to the SA Institute of Civil Engineering.Around 19% of the national roads are toll roads, most of which are maintained by Sanral, while the rest have been concessioned to private companies to develop, operate and maintain.A multi-billion rand freeway improvement scheme has significantly eased congestion on the roads in Gauteng, the country’s busiest province.S’hamba Sonke (“walking together’) is a labour-intensive road maintenance programme, with projects run by the provinces to upgrade and repair roads in rural areas.South Africa’s Public Transport Strategy plans to integrate rail, taxi and bus services in co-operation with private operators, both operationally and through ownership. Johannesburg’s successes with the Bus Rapid Transport System (BRT) has led to it being adapted and implemented in other South African cities, including Cape Town, Nelson Mandela Bay, Rustenburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni. As the vast majority of South Africans use taxis as their prime transport, the government has introduced compulsory safety standards and a taxi recapitalisation programme, which gets rids of unsafe taxis through a scrapping allowance.RailwaysSouth Africa has an extensive rail network – the 14th longest in the world – connecting with networks in the sub-Saharan region. The country’s rail infrastructure, which connects the ports with the rest of South Africa, represents about 80% of Africa’s total.Improving the country’s 20 247km rail network is a top government priority, with projects aiming to increase freight rail volumes and increase market share of container traffic. The rail network is managed by the Department of Public Enterprises via Transnet. Transnet Freight Rail is the largest railroad and heavy haulier in southern Africa, with about 21 000km of rail network, of which about 1 500km are heavy haul lines. Just over 8 200km of the lines are electrified.Passenger rail is also being completely overhauled, with a 20-year fleet renewal programme in place to buy more than 7 200 new trains. Managed and implemented by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), the programme focuses on revitalising the local industry through local manufacturing of components. The existing rail network will be upgraded to take advantage of the new coaches’ technological features.Around 2.2-million people travel by train every day in South Africa. Metrorail commuter services can be found in Cape Town, the Eastern Cape Province, Durban, and greater Johannesburg and Pretoria, focusing mainly on poorer South Africans.Tourists and well-heeled passengers can travel on the Blue Train, one of the world’s most famous luxury trains, while Shosholoza Meyl transports passengers between the country’s major cities. The Gautrain, Africa’s only high-speed train, was opened just days before the start of the World Cup in 2010. Servicing Johannesburg, Pretoria and OR Tambo International Airport, it is supported by a network of feeder buses. About 40 000 people use the service every day.The Gautrain can travel at speeds of 160 km/h, enabling commuters to make the trip from Johannesburg to Pretoria in less than 40 minutes.Airports and airlinesSouth Africa’s 10 airports handle more than 98% of the country’s commercial traffic, with 200 000 aircraft landings and 10-million departing passengers annually. The R20-billion airports upgrade ahead of the World Cup in 2010 focused on OR Tambo International in Johannesburg, Cape Town International, and the new airport, King Shaka International, outside Durban. The seven smaller airports are domestic airports: Port Elizabeth, East London, George, Kimberley, Upington and Pilanesberg.State-owned Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) is responsible for managing the country’s airports and improving productivity of its airports. Other airports include Lanseria (Midrand), Gateway (Polokwane), Nelspruit and Kruger (Mpumalanga). In 2012, South African Airways (SAA) was voted the best airline in Africa for the 10th year in a row by UK global aviation research organisation Skytrax.South African Airways (SAA) is by far the largest air carrier in Africa, with connections to more than 28 cities across the continent. Going Green: Cleantech VC Funding Narrows Focus to Energy Efficiency

Posted On Dec 17 2019 by

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… In a new study released by Ernst & Young and Dow Jones VentureSource, cleantech startups focusing on energy efficiency raised more from venture capitalists in the last quarter of 2009 than those working on electricity generation. While fewer dollars were spent from the third to fourth quarters, more investments were made, especially in the energy efficiency category, suggesting more focused investments. While investment in cleantech startups as a whole dropped 45% from $868.5 million in the third quarter to $564.5 million in the fourth, the money was refocused into energy efficiency, which nearly doubled from $133.7 million in Q3 to $252.8 million in Q4. Energy generation companies, Q3’s leading cleantech investment category at over $300 million, was dethroned in Q4 as they fell 62% to $118.5 million. 51 total deals in Q3 rose 21% to 62 deals in the final quarter of 2009. Energy efficiency leap-frogged energy generation, gaining 8% more of the total deals between quarters, while energy generation lost 12% of its share. Ernst & Young cleantech director John de Younge says these numbers signify a shift from the expensive nature of the solar companies, which dominate the electricity generation sector, to less fiscally demanding energy efficiency companies.“Energy efficiency is in the sweet spot of many venture capital investors in terms of skill sets and funding parameters, particularly given its basis in information technology,” says de Younge. “Consequently, we may see investor participation in cleantech broaden.”This trend echoes that of overall VC investments which saw an increase in the amount of deals along with a drop in value from Q3 to Q4 of 2009 – a clear sign of investors more carefully spending their funds. Cleantech, and more specifically energy efficiency startups, could see even further growth in 2010 as venture capitalists are set to spend even more in the first part of the year thanks to a boost in funds raised at the end of 2009. Even if the VCs decide to remain cautious as they did at the end of 2009, they seem to be taking a shining to the energy efficiency startups, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see continued growth in that sector.Photo by Flickr user NeoGaboX. Developers Are Pissed, Frustrated by New Twitter Decree

Posted On Dec 15 2019 by

first_imgadam popescu Tags:#twitter#web A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification Claiming a desire to deliver “a more consistent Twitter experience,” today the San Francisco company announced a laundry list of changes, many of them vague, to how developers can access tweets, prompting outrage, confusion and frustration from the third party developers who piggyback on the microblogging site’s ecosystem. Many view the change as the latest move from the company towards tightening its grip and owning the platform, a move that will eventually choke out and steer users to only use Twitter’s own apps. The days of popular third-party services like Tweetbot and Echofon may be numbered. For others, it means manpower and time in order to change. Alex Benzer, the founder and chief executive of PHP social network software maker SocialEngine, and social inbox site FanMix isn’t looking forward to the changes. “It’s going to require energy and it’s not ideal,” Benzer said. “We’re going to have to register for an API key which isn’t that big of a deal, but we’re going to have to make it work.”Benzer said he’s more concerned about his FanMix site, a Gmail like service for social networks, collecting all your social conversations and email, into one unified inbox. Right now FanMix users can sign in with their Twitter accounts, which uses Twitter’s API.“Basically it (FanMix) pulls in all your tweets and mentions of you and displays them,” he said. Today’s move by Twitter threatens that model. “It’s obviously a move for a more restrictive API,” he said. Today’s move will stop public developers from writing script that gets data from Twitter. “That signals a shift in the company’s direction. The general feeling is that they want people to use Twitter and not apps built on Twitter.”Bottlenose CEO Nova Spivack took to Twitter to vent this afternoon. He swayed from angry to acceptance and back again, seemingly by the minute. Not long after that tweet, he wrote “Information wants to be free. Twitter is going against the tide. The music industry couldn’t stop it from happening. How will Twitter?”Brian Norgard, the founder of social video site Chill sees today’s move as the logical step in Twitter’s move towards owning the field. He says the writing on the wall was clear to see, several months ago. Twitter has gone from being a toy, to being one of the most powerful media companies on the planet, he said.“You’re dancing with the devil when you’re building on top of another platform,” said Norgard. He thinks the move was done to maintain control. “If you’re going to do something core, like reading tweets, Twitter is going to probably want to control that aspect of the business.”Norgard says his site won’t be affected, but says “I feel for a lot of developers.”Still, he tempered that by saying the changes have happened before and will happen again, citing Photobucket building on the back of Myspace. “Twitter’s not the first, won’t be the last.”center_img Related Posts The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro…last_img read more
