Burg tops fan voting for IMCA fendered divisions

first_imgADEL, Iowa – The number of votes left little doubt that Andrew Burg has quite a fan following. Burg’s IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock was the top choice in August balloting for the Sybesma Graphics IMCA Facebook Fan Favorite contest. As a result, the 13-year-veteran will receive a mini-hood from contest sponsor Sybesma Graphics. “I’ve always raced a Hobby Stock. I’ve spent my entire career in that division,” said Burg, who finished fourth in points at Stuart, anticipates a similar finish at Boone and won a single feature at each track this season. “I like the cost of the class and being able to race with the best of the best. We race with a lot of the best drivers in the country every Saturday and Sunday of the season.” He shares a shop with Shannon Anderson, John Watson and Jamie Songer. “I started racing with my dad when I got out of the service. I bought a used car for the first season and we built a new one for the next year,” Burg said. “It’s gotten a little more stressful over the last two years but things have come to fruition more. I’ve made a lot of friendships and met a lot of people racing.” Burg’s 16-year-old son Keith does most of the work on his dad’s car at the track. He’ll start his own Hobby Stock career next season in one of Burg’s used rides. Jimmy Keenan, Watson and often Songer round out the crew. Sponsors include Supreme Lawn & Landscaping, Chix Gear Racewear, CG Customs and Tony Moro Power Coating and Blasting, all of Des Moines; Finishline Auto Body & Paint of Grimes; Zipp’s Photos and Zipp’s Pizza of Adair; Ruby’s Pub of Stuart; Hawkeye Auto Salvage of DeSoto; Krazy Kal’s of Atlantic; and Five1seven Designs of Laguna Park, Texas.last_img read more

Gunman terrorizes Catholic church before Mass

Posted On Dec 30 2019 by
first_imgPALMDALE – A 65-year-old man armed with a gun terrorized a Catholic church before Sunday evening services, shouting profanities, assaulting a priest who tried to calm him and making threats as choir members held him down. “There’s going to be a killing,” Claude Sricchia is said to have shouted once he entered St. Mary’s Catholic Church about half an hour before the 5:30 p.m. Mass. “It was kind of a frightening experience,” said Msgr. Stephen Downes, St. Mary’s pastor. “The man was shouting in the church, `Clear the church, there’s going to be a killing.”‘ Sheriff’s deputies arrived, and as they were handcuffing Sricchia they found a loaded .45-caliber pistol tucked in the back of his waistband, officials said. Sricchia, who lives in Acton, was arrested on suspicion of making terrorist threats, assault and having a concealed firearm, Bonsall said. Sricchia was not a member of the Palmdale parish, Downes said. The pastor had just arrived at the church at 1600 E. Ave. R when a staff member called his cell phone, alerting him to a man shouting inside the church. “As I walked in, he had gotten to the choir area and became very aggressive,” Downes said. “He hit a male choir member on the side of the head, then a maintenance man tackled him to the ground. Other choir members held him down.” Downes said the man was cursing, saying there was no God or religion, Downes said. “He said, `I believed for 65 years. There is no God,”‘ Downes said. Downes went to try to calm Sricchia but when the man realized that Downes was a priest, “he became enraged and cursed and swore even more and called me a child molester,” Downes said. The man kicked Downes, knocking him to the ground. Mass was held but started late, Downes said.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
