first_imgVALENCIA – A Salinas man accused of leaving the scene of a Thanksgiving Day crash that killed a Bell Gardens father and son near Gorman pleaded not guilty Friday to two felonies. Javier Barajas Zavala, 41, was charged with hit-and-run driving and manslaughter when he turned himself in to the California Highway Patrol’s Newhall office on Dec. 5. His surrender came nearly two weeks after his 1999 Peterbilt big-rig allegedly rear-ended a stalled pickup truck in the northbound lanes of the Golden State Freeway. In the truck were Jose Palomino and his 15-year-old son, Julio, who were both killed. Zavala is reported to have left the scene, continuing north to state Route 138, where his truck caught fire at Lancaster Road. A short time earlier, a caller reported the truck stolen, but investigators now believe it was Zavala. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
