with its navy having the capability to blockade China and cut its supply lines.India obviously is not a pushover a country that can be humiliated in the war fantasies of Chinese tabloids India of course can’t risk a war either One China would be a formidable adversary because of its ballistic missiles and a stockpile of nukes that is believed to double the size of India’s Two there is a realistic chance of India facing a war on two fronts because China’s regional stooge Pakistan would see in a confrontation the possibility of harassing India But the biggest reason India won’t start (or prefer) a war is political Unlike dictatorships countries run by democratically-elected governments are unanswerable to people With parliamentary elections on the horizon Narendra Modi’s government will certainly not risk a war it is not confident of winning Also the economic burden of a conflict would deter Modi from any misadventure in the run-up to the elections The arrayed pieces on the chessboard point at the futility of a military conflict and thus also of war-hysteria The Indian side contrary to the jingoism it embraces when talking about Pakistan knows that the only solution to the stand-off could be diplomatic It has therefore treated the conflict with much more maturity cutting out the rabble-rousing usually reserved for Pakistan India has merely pointed out at its security concerns over China’s presence in the Doka La region and argued for a diplomatic solution It has thus left for itself more options on the table And also avoided getting into a trap where it has to mouth rhetoric it can’t live up to Like Wallach in the Good Bad and Ugly it has so far not made the mistake of talking about shooting India will not back-off easily from Doka La especially after the bluster and boasts mouthed by Chinese media Just as it had dug its heels on the LAC during the conflict in 1986 for several years India would play the game of diplomacy brinkmanship and attrition As the game plays out the Chinese media should grab some popcorn and watch some of the iconic scenes of Good Bad and Ugly It will calm their nerves and also let the government deal with the Doklam stand-off without worrying about the "sacred wish" of its people By: Express Web Desk | Los Angeles | Published: March 21 2017 5:04 pm Hollywood actor Tom Cruise underwent extensive training on Tuesday night alleging that he was transporting beef In spite of producing the relevant paperwork that confirmed the meat in his tempo was buffalo meat and he had the necessary permission to transport it the five kept threatening to call the police he said Eventually they went to the Vashi police which registered a case against the five persons However the trader claimed 70-80 kg of the meat had rotten by the time he could leave from the police station at 2 am “I suffered a loss of Rs 15000-20000 a big amount for me By the time I reached home some of the meat had rotten since quite a Landge added they questioned the five people on what authority they had demanded a receipt of the meat carried by Qureshi “Normally if anyone has such information they have to inform the police or a government authority No one can unilaterally carry out searches They also forced the driver to come to the police station Hence an FIR was registered against the five for unlawful assembly and illegal The view was not shared by others who either pointed the finger at Verstappen in his last race as a teenager or accused Vettel of needless aggression at a key point in the championship Long before Hamilton had stretched his lead to 28 points with six races remaining Ferrari’s official Twitter feed stated that “VER (Verstappen) took #Kimi7 out and then he went to #Seb5” “What we tweeted was a family enters Pakistan through the border crossing in Torkham (AP Photo) Top News Today Pakistan is troubled by the obligation of self-diagnosis it simply can’t allow because of the long road it has travelled with wrong policies Its new army chief seems to have acted with urgency to stop the fallout of these policies but the burden of correction is too big Adviser on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz says it will trigger a blowback Pakistan can’t afford But reaffirming postures that have brought Pakistan to the brink also trigger international isolation This is what happened last month when Afghan guards on the other side of the Torkham border shot and killed a Pakistani major Defence Minister Khwaja Asif thought he should fling a warning and show Pakistan is capable of striking back But when he said the death would be avenged he mentioned “enemies” who would be punished not Afghanistan The word covered Afghanistan India and — after the Modi visit to the US — America Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry addressing the senate couldn’t resist including the US which was “probably upset over the multibillion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project (CPEC)” Islamabad journalist Imtiaz Gul caught the reaction of a “Chinese friend” after Chaudhry’s strategic gem thus: “Is the US really upset And if it is do Pakistani officials really need to state this so publicly Pakistan should have the confidence to stand on its own two feet Why does it have to present CPEC as a life-jacket” Clearly meant for internal consumption the statements described Pakistan making up for regional isolation with bravado If Pakistan thinks it can stand behind China and avoid self-correction it may be mistaken What bothers President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan and all the neighbours are Pakistan-based elements that also bother China The Chinese contractors working on projects in Pakistan have been murdered in all parts The isolation now obvious enough to hurt the common man can’t be tackled by leaning on China It is not global strategy that is delivering the new blows to Pakistan’s stability but Pakistan’s internal problems The traditional excuse that no one should rebuke Pakistan for internal developments is no longer valid The Chinese complained about the abduction of their nationals in Islamabad in 2007 by terrorists hiding in Islamabad’s Red Mosque an al Qaeda watering-hole but Pakistan was unable to punish the leader of the mosque Later the same al Qaeda-backed cleric defied the Pakistan army saying he wouldn’t call its soldiers martyrs to Islam if they fell fighting the Taliban The same cleric was allowed to become one of the arbiters in Pakistan’s abortive attempt to agree peace with the Taliban The truth is many troublemakers in Pakistan postpone coming back into the orbit of state sovereignty because they see the nonstate actors still calling the shots in policymaking They can do this because the policymakers continue to be scared of being targeted and killed Strategy is based on the realities facing the state It is important to first settle the kind of state one is talking about Is it a powerful state surrounded by weak states Is it a mid-level state that can use leverage if any to make up for its unequal status Let’s accept that in all cases the big equaliser will be the national economy and its global connections; which is why strategy has to be decided by its civilian leaders It becomes particularly relevant if the state is unequal in many respects but has developed a revisionist posture against the status quo Unfortunately Pakistan has favoured the identity of a warrior state articulated mostly by nonstate organisations bemused by the state’s reluctance to wage jihad What Afghanistan is doing on the Durand Line these days is not an act of hubris on the part of a small state but a measured response of a neighbour sensing aggressive isolationism on the part of Pakistan If Pakistan is looking for a way out of this predicament it must look closely at China The rise of China in the world was not hinged on adoption of isolationism but radical rejection of China’s historic introversion through the adoption of free market and economic development The writer is consulting editor ‘Newsweek Pakistan’ For all the latest Opinion News download Indian Express App More Top NewsBy: IANS | Mumbai | Published: May across 9286 acres and costing Rs 16000 crore was inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday The redevelopment work undertaken to provide bigger and better houses for tenants has ensured that 68 per cent of prime land in Worli (Central Mumbai) will be dedicated to residents who will get 625 sq ft homes with a carpet area of 500 sq ft The remaining 32 per cent of the land on which the houses will be build would be allowed for commercial sale by the developers “The inordinate delay in taking the project forward for the past 21 years was because of the vested interests of the previous governments and some people As a result thousands of chawl residents were deprived of redevelopment project including better homes and infrastructure in the vicinity” Fadnavis said Apart from the BDD chawl there are around 14000 dilapidated structures whose redevelopment would also be taken up and the work is expected to be completed in the next two years he added The BDD chawl which is an integral identity of Mumbai city also marks one of the biggest housing projects in India While indicating that the previous government lacked the initiative to develop the BDD chawl because it had vested interest in the prime land worth several hundred crores Fadnavis said “Instead of BDD chawl residents the previous government’s concern was vested interest” He added: “To pave the way for quick redevelopment work I even made amendments in the existing Act to facilitate better houses and civic amenities for the people We have ensured that the redevelopment would bring maximum benefit to the residents and not the private developers The project is not developer-driven as was being done in the past” Elaborating on the project the chief minister said almost 68 per cent of the land would be reserved for rehabilitation of residents who will be provided with bigger accommodation from the existing 160 sq ft “In the remaining 32 per cent land houses would be built for sale component by the developers to make it commercially viable as they would fund the project” The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has been appointed as the nodal agency for the project
