Economist says Alberta could have long road to recovery Alberta is sitting at its highest unemployment rate since 2011, according to new February numbers from Statistics Canada.ATB Chief Economist Todd Hirsch says he’s been waiting for a jobs report like this one for the past few months.“It probably was about where I expected. It was a loss of about 14,000 jobs and the unemployment rate jumped from 4.5 per cent to 5.3 per cent.”He says you can expect things to get worse, before they get better.“I’m expecting that the unemployment rate could rise to 6.5, maybe 7 per cent by the summertime. That is too high, but again it’s important to remember it was higher in fact, in 2010, and we recovered from that pretty quickly,” he said.Hirsch believes employment numbers will improve later this year as oil prices start to rebound. by News Staff Posted Mar 13, 2015 8:28 am MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email
