Exams made easy

Posted On Nov 28 2019 by

first_imgIf you could subtract examinations from student life, those years would add up to magic. Unfortunately, studies and evaluations go hand in hand and often lead to undue stress in your child. Fix it fast!Stress is a vicious cycle: Once you start worrying, it can block the mind and make you forget faster than you learn. It manifests itself in inexplicable stomach pains, menstrual cramps, headaches, nausea, diarrhoea. It could express itself with sweating, irritability, insomnia, asthma and blackouts. “High levels of stress lead to the secretion of the stress hormone cortisol which weakens your immune system,” explains Dr PV Vaidyanathan, Mumbai-based paediatrician and author of two parenting books, Make Your Child Stress-Free and Managing the Unmanageable Child. However, experts say some amount of stress is necessary for a student taking exams. This is called eustress or good stress which boosts performance. If your child is absolutely cool about the exams, her performance may not be up to the mark. So balance it out.To help your child retain everything, perform well and keep upbeat in the run up to the exams and during those days you need to start ahead. Make sure her immunity is built with good food, exercises, enough rest and sleep and a happy environment.Serve her the right food: She will not only be stronger and more energetic, but her memory will also be strengthened with the right foods. “Turn her plate into a colourful palette with a rainbow of fruits and veggies that includes a variety of colours-red, green, yellow and orange. Strawberries, tomatoes and carrots are all great immunity boosters,” says Mumbai-based nutritionist Naini Setalvad.”Serve up food rich in memory-boosting Omega-3 fatty acids such as flaxseeds, walnuts, almonds, etc,” she says. Grapes, cherries, apples, spinach, broccoli and beet root are also great for memory. “Vitamin B-complex is excellent for better memory too. So reach out for oats, bananas and avocados,” adds Setalvad. Make sure she drinks enough water. Dehydration can play havoc with memory.Allow her enough rest: Sleep rests the brain, sharpens concentration, boosts memory and retrieval of facts. So make sure that your child follows a healthy sleep pattern. “While eight to nine hours should do, some children may need 10 to 12 hours’ sleep a day,” says Vaidyanathan.Leave her with free time: Stress and physical inactivity are directly linked. “Dance or a sport like cycling, skipping, swimming or a short sprint will not only give him a rush of happy hormones but also improve his concentration,” says Dr Gaurav Sharma, sports medicine specialist, Holy Angel Hospital, New Delhi. Make sure that he gets enough free time and breaks. Sometimes indulging in a comparatively sedentary hobby like music can also lift his spirits.Fight the fear factors: Identifying the exam fear factors that are stressing out your child and addressing them immediately are essential to steer through these days. We have identified some for you along with expert solutions. Don’t hesitate to seek professional help if you think you can’t cope alone.I have sudden panic stations: Where it comes from: Inadequate preparation, poor time management, frequent comparison with others. How to handle it: Comfort your child and try to cheer him up by chatting about lighter matters. Help her strategise well and seek tips from teachers. “Let her not waste time by discussing with friends or class mates over the telephone,” says Jeromey Jaypaul, guidance counsellor, Bishop Cotton Boys School, Bengaluru. Friends can mislead and want to distract and unnerve you. “Ask your child to avoid people who make him feel low,” says Dr Jayanti Dutta, consultant clinical psychologist and associate professor, Clinical Psychology, Lady Irwin College, New Delhi.I won’t retain a thing! where it comes from: Poor sleep, bad eating habits, stress-induced panic. How to handle it: Says Dr Jitendra Nagpal, senior consultant psychiatrist, Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences, New Delhi, “Whenever memory blanks out, one should sit back, relax for a while, put one’s head down and concentrate. It may take few minutes to recollect the information but it is possible to get hold of it.” The trick is to be calm and concentrate. Study hours should be punctuated with short breaks to retain and remember! To build memory for your kid, keep quizzing her with brain games and puzzles through the year. There is an awful lot to cover, where it comes from: Disorganised, last-ditch study, lack of concentration. How to handle it: Studying can be like eating a meal. Suggest that your child breaks it into different courses and goes systematically with bite-sized portions. Encourage studying in short bursts of 40 to 60 minutes. Improve her concentration by de-cluttering the room she studies in. “It doesn’t matter if you haven’t covered all the topics. Select a few but be thorough. Think positive,” suggests Dutta. My parents will be embarrassed. Where it comes from: Unduly high expectations from parents or lack of communication, or both. How to handle it: Keep the talk lines open. “Tone down your expectations from your child and praise her for her achievements in other areas,” says Dr Arvind Taneja, advisor and senior consultant, Paediatrics, Max Healthcare, New Delhi.advertisementadvertisementRather, help her explore other career options if academics is not her strongest point. Ensure that she doesn’t take poor academic performance as personal failure and loss of face socially. Also, don’t compare your child with other children-this exacerbates fear.last_img read more

Ind vs Eng: Injured Zaheer Khan unlikely to play in second Test

Posted On Nov 28 2019 by

first_imgThe prospect of India’s pace spearhead Zaheer Khan playing in the second Test at Trent Bridge seems remote.”He has shown a considerable improvement and we would take a call on him on the eve of the match in consultation with the team physio,” stated team manager Anirudh Choudhary in Nottingham. But those who witnessed Indian team’s training session knew that the manager’s statement was far from convincing.Zaheer bowled 13-odd overs in the first Test at Lord’s, London, before a strain in his right hamstring forced him to sit out and severely handicapped the Indian bowling attack as England thrashed India by 196 runs.As soon as Zaheer arrived at the training session with his teammates on Wednesday, the prying eyes of the Indian media contingent was on the injured speedster.Long after almost all the Indian players had their nets, Zaheer came out in company with team physio Ashish Kaushik. He did a few rounds of lap of the ground, did some sprints under the physio’s observation and then picked up his jumper, only to disappear again inside the dressing room. His bearing wasn’t the one of man who is looking to bowl for India in 48 hours.Ishant Sharma didn’t bowl a delivery in anger and it was apparent he had a few other personal issues to handle like shaving off his flowing hair which have been much like his personal statement in the last four years. His new look created a huge buzz among the electronic media.Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir were two of the other notable cricketers who had fitness issues during the first Test.advertisementTendulkar, unlike his second innings appearance, was crisp and smartly shaven and was one of the first ones to walk to the nets. Gambhir too look eager to have a hit even though the bowling on offer wasn’t great shakes.Ishant didn’t bowl at all and neither did Munaf and Sreesanth, after sending down a few serious overs.India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, certainly rattled by his recent batting failures, indulged in some furious hitting down the ground.-With PTI inputslast_img read more

The great escape! Brazil live to see another day in World Cup

Posted On Nov 27 2019 by

first_imgDavid Luiz celebrates after scoring his goal for Brazil Tight and tense as it was, it was enough to keep Brazil’s national obsession of winning the World Cup on home soil from taking a desperately disappointing turn. And it wasn’t Neymar, the country’s poster boy for this year’s World Cup, that played the key role this time. It was goalkeeper Julio Cesar, the country’s scapegoat from the last World Cup, who made several crucial saves and even got some help from the woodwork in a 3-2 penalty shootout win over Chile. With the score level at 1-1 on Saturday, Brazil was inches away from an early exit when Chile forward Mauricio Pinilla hit the crossbar in the final moments of extra time. Then, on the final kick of the match and after a pair of saves from Cesar in the shootout, Gonzalo Jara hit the post.”I believe the Brazilian people just needed this,” said Cesar, who made a mistake four years ago in South Africa that led to a quarterfinal loss. “The players, everybody else, we needed this.”The fans still have to wait to celebrate the title, however. There are three more matches to win before the home team can lay claim to a sixth World Cup title.”Let’s see if we can make fewer mistakes in the next matches,” Brazil coach Felipe Scolari said. “Perhaps next time we won’t be as lucky.”To be fair, it wasn’t just luck that saw Brazil through to the quarterfinals at Mineirao Stadium, which was a sea of Brazilian yellow with islands of Chilean red.advertisementNeymar, David Luiz and Marcelo scored in the shootout, and Cesar saved penalties from Pinilla and Alexis Sanchez before watching Jara’s final attempt hit the post. The game over, some Brazilian players fell to the ground, exhausted and emotionally drained. Willian, who missed a penalty for Brazil, sobbed uncontrollably, as Fred helped him to his feet. The Chileans stood still, staring into the ground, wiping the sweat off their faces.”Do you think I can be satisfied with the result?” Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli said. “We’ve played a hard 120 minutes even if everybody was against us in the stadium.”Brazil, which extended its 39-year unbeaten streak in home competitive matches to 61, will next face either Colombia or Uruguay in the quarterfinals.Brazil dominated the first half against Chile and took the lead when Luiz scored following a corner kick. After Sanchez equalized for Chile, Brazil had several chances to regain the lead.Neymar’s header deflected wide, Fred lifted the ball over the bar from close range and Dani Alves forced a backpedaling Claudio Bravo to make a one-hand save. But after referee Howard Webb disallowed Hulk’s second-half goal, ruling he had used his arm to control a long pass, Brazil lost the initiative to a Chile team that can leave the World Cup with pride after eliminating defending champion Spain in the group stage.Pressing deep inside Brazil’s half, Chile pressured the home side into making mistakes or resorting to long passes to Hulk and Neymar. And, again, it was Cesar that often came up big, making a spectacular save on Charles Aranguiz’s shot to keep Chile from taking the lead in the second half.”We tried to give everything, we tried to fight for a dream, and we didn’t achieve it,” Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal said. “But we gave all our effort on the pitch.”Chile has never defeated Brazil in Brazil and hasn’t reached the World Cup quarterfinals since 1962, when it hosted the tournament.Brazil, meanwhile, has reached the quarterfinals of each World Cup since Argentina eliminated it in the second round in 1990.Brazil went ahead in the 18th minute after Thiago Silva deflected Neymar’s corner kick toward the far post. Luiz was given the goal but replays showed Jara may have touched the ball before it went in.Brazil lost the lead when it failed to cope with Chile’s aggressive pressure in a throw-in situation deep inside its half of the field. Eduardo Vargas intercepted Hulk’s pass and found Sanchez on the right side of the area. The Barcelona striker scored easily with a shot toward the far post.In the end, however, it was Brazil moving on to the quarterfinals, with the hopes of a nation planted on the backs of every player.”I hope these are lessons being given to the whole population,” Scolari said. “If you make a promise, you must deliver. This is what the players are doing.”Team Lineups:advertisementBrazil: Julio Cesar; Dani Alves, Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Marcelo; Luiz Gustavo, Fernandinho (Ramires, 72), Oscar (Willian, 106); Hulk, Fred (Jo, 64), NeymarChile: Claudio Bravo; Mauricio Isla, Gary Medel (Jose Rojas, 108), Eugenio Mena, Francisco Silva, Gonzalo Jara; Arturo Vidal (Mauricio Pinilla, 87), Marcelo Diaz, Charles Aranguiz; Alexis Sanchez, Eduardo Vargas (Felipe Gutierrez, 57)last_img read more
